With or Without a Drum Set
Playing the acoustic drum set, sometimes called a "trap set" or "drum kit", requires the drummer to use both hands and both feet. This four-way coordination can take years to master.
Properly recording a drum set requires hours of set up, countless microphones, cables and stands, an acoustically suitable room, a large mixer or preamp rack and many expensive pieces of outboard gear. For a rock band or jazz group though, there is no substitute for a live drummer. A great deal of time, energy and money is invested into getting the perfect drum sound.
If you don't have access to a drummer or a drum set you can still create drum tracks using a programmable drum machine or a drum sampler. The Roland TR808 drum machine made its debut in 1980 and was one of the first widely used machines of it's kind. A band like Afrika Bambaataa quickly adopted the machine, completely replacing the real drummer. Also, Marvin Gaye's famous track 'Sexual Healing' features the 808.
