Copyright Basics

Copyright basics (in United States):

Copyright duration lasts for lifetime of author + 70 years

Public domain:

is where your songs to go when copyright expires

* You can't copyright an idea or title

* You can copyright "an expression of an idea"

Original work of Authorship:

An expression of an idea fixed in a tangible form that can be communicated, distributed, reproduced, or otherwise perceived

*Two ways to copyright

1) Poor man's copyright:

Mail material to yourself via registered mail, then never open it

2) Register your material to Library of Congress in Washington D.C. with proper forms (PA form: Performing Arts, SR form: Sound Recording) + $45 fee

[side trip]

'Songwriter': Someone who writes music, lyrics or both
