What is Groove?
Groove is the subtle variations in a player's style that makes them unique. For a drummer, the two main components of Groove are 'Dynamics' and 'Swing'.
Dynamics are how hard you hit the drums. A great drummer may play with thousands of dynamic variations. MIDI allows for a maximum of 128 dynamics values, called 'Velocities'.
Swing (also called 'Shuffle') is where the drummer puts extra 'space' in between certain notes to make the rhythm 'looser', more like a heartbeat than a machine. Some patterns will sound better with swing and some will not. Experimentation is the key to understanding the effect of swing.
